What Is the Vegetarian Food Festival in Phuket?
If you’ve started seeing yellow flags with red Chinese writing around town —
that means the Vegetarian Festival is coming.
And yes, it’s a big deal.
What is it?
An annual, nine-day Chinese-Thai celebration, observed mostly by descendants of the Hokkien community.
It focuses on:
- Spiritual cleansing
- Physical health
- Good deeds
- Wishing for long life, prosperity, and good luck
When?
The dates change every year, but it usually takes place between late September and early October.
What Happens?
- Religious ceremonies at 25+ shrines across the island
- Some rituals are intense: fire walking, body piercing, and extreme displays of devotion
(Not recommended for kids. Or the faint of heart.) - Massive fireworks
- Pop-up vegetarian food stalls
- Restaurants that display a yellow flag offer special vegetarian dishes just for the festival
It’s local, unique, and very Phuket.
You might love it. You might cover your eyes.
Either way — now you know what those yellow flags mean.
