For balance, the seafood restaurants around the Rawai seafront are genuinely excellent and among the best on the island. The fish market is worth knowing about separately as a destination in its own right.

It is a tough area to be in if you just want chips after yoga. But for anyone who cares about what they eat, it is one of the better places on the island to be based.

The rental market in Rawai covers a genuinely wide range, which is one of the reasons it attracts such a varied community.

Rawai is a launch point for many of the day trips and boat tours that depart Phuket. The pier area gives easy access to nearby islands and the south of the island generally is well positioned for exploring beyond Phuket itself.

Rawai has a visible digital nomad community. Laptops at coffee shops, coworking spaces scattered around the area, the general vibe of people who work remotely and have chosen to do so somewhere with good weather and affordable living costs. For shorter stays, Rawai has a range of hotels from basic hostels through to comfortable mid-range boutique options. It is not a resort hotel destination in the way that some other parts of Phuket are, which is part of its appeal for people who want to experience the area as a resident rather than a tourist.

Rawai is not the right fit for everyone. If you want nightlife, a lively tourist strip, or easy access to a swimmable beach directly outside your door, there are better options on the island. Patong serves the nightlife crowd. Kamala and Bang Tao suit people who want beach access with a slightly more upmarket feel.

What Rawai offers is a settled, community-oriented life with excellent fitness infrastructure, good food, reasonable rents, and the kind of energy that rewards people who want to actually live somewhere rather than just stay there.
