Aren’t You Scared of Tsunami Warnings in Phuket?
Honestly? Not really.
I don’t think about it much — and when I do, here’s my take:
If something happens, I’ll grab my family and head to higher ground.
Tsunamis don’t hit like in the movies — it’s not one giant wave out of nowhere.
The real danger is what comes after: flooding, and the massive pull of water going back out.
That said — here’s what’s in place:
- Tsunami evacuation signs and route markers all over the island
- Loudspeaker systems that broadcast in five languages:
Thai, English, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian - Trucks with loudspeakers drive through local neighborhoods to alert people when needed
- Monthly warning system tests (usually the first Wednesday of the month)
So yes — the island is prepared.
If something happens, the system works.
And if it doesn’t? We run uphill and pray
