Do People Tip in Thailand?

Short answer:
It’s not expected — but it’s appreciated.

Here’s how tipping works:

  • Street food, small restaurants: No tip. Just pay.
  • Western restaurants:
    • Sometimes they add 10% service charge
    • If not, feel free to leave something if you had great service
  • No one will be offended if you don’t tip — that’s the norm here

Extra Notes:

  • VAT (7%) may be added to your bill — before or after a tip
  • You don’t need to calculate a perfect percentage
  • If you round up or leave 20–50 THB, it’s more than enough

When I tip (personally):

  • Taxi: Leave the change, or 20 THB if it was excellent
  • Coffee delivery (in the rain): +10 THB via app
  • Mechanic coming to the house (flat tire, etc.): 100 THB
  • Grocery/Lazada delivery: No tip
