Do People Tip in Thailand?
Short answer:
It’s not expected — but it’s appreciated.
Here’s how tipping works:
- Street food, small restaurants: No tip. Just pay.
- Western restaurants:
- Sometimes they add 10% service charge
- If not, feel free to leave something if you had great service
- No one will be offended if you don’t tip — that’s the norm here
Extra Notes:
- VAT (7%) may be added to your bill — before or after a tip
- You don’t need to calculate a perfect percentage
- If you round up or leave 20–50 THB, it’s more than enough
When I tip (personally):
- Taxi: Leave the change, or 20 THB if it was excellent
- Coffee delivery (in the rain): +10 THB via app
- Mechanic coming to the house (flat tire, etc.): 100 THB
- Grocery/Lazada delivery: No tip
